Big corporates and even little indie companies are using Virtual Reality as a tool to become viral and increase brand awareness. IKEA VR

IKEA developed a VR app that lets you try their products without requiring to physically go to the shop. The application runs on HTC Vive and gives you the tools to change sizes and colors so you fit them in a virtual room. Right now it contains just a kitchen area where you can use as a playground.

KFC – The Hard Way

This VR application is developed by KFC as an employee training program for fried chicken. It starts with the chicken inspection and it goes up to the process of frying it according to KFC recipe. This training program is really one of it’s kind. By including a thriller theme, it ensures an entertaining gamified experience for the employees that are part of the training.

HOLORIDE

Holoride is a VR experience for back seat passengers. The mission is to turn the vehicles into moving theme parks. Holoride takes everyday journeys and transforms them into immersive experiences by combining navigational map data and car data into a virtual reality world. By matching what you see and what you feel with almost no latency (and this is what holoride proudly admits), the system is able to reduce the motion sickness. So, enjoying a journey in transit becomes a positive and entertaining experience.

BBC Home – A VR SPACEWALK

This is a VR experience is presented by BBC. Inspired by NASA’s educational program for astronauts, this experience takes you to the space about 400km away from Earth. An immersive story and quests to be completed make this an unforgettable immersive game experience.

Virtual Reality is the technology that makes you experience anything, anywhere by unleashing any possible imagination. Right now, it is the most immersive technology that tricks human brain by making it believe to be somewhere it is really not. In the current market, there are head mounted displays, most times with integrated headphones and hand controllers. With these head mounted displays (VR Headsets) you may look at any part of the virtual world, move freely and interact with 3d virtual objects.

In the video below you may have a look at what Codemodeon did by using the Oculus Rift device. It is the Turkcell Kopilot VR virtual reality application demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2018, Barcelona.

In the traditional approach, a virtual reality headset is able to simulate feelings just for 2 senses (sight and hearing). In order to simulate feelings for the other 3 senses there are different sensory solutions in the market. One of them is FeelReal. This device is wearable electronic mask which simulates smell. It supports hundreds of different smell which can be triggered from the software while you are immersed in the 3D virtual world. Smells like metal, gunpowder, fire, ocean, forest etc. are just a few examples from the wide range thart FeelReal offers.

The HaptX device is used to simulate the touch perception. It is a virtual reality glove that gives force feedback when we touch or grab something in the virtual world. The full potential of this glove goes up to 1.8 kg pressure for each finger.

Oculus Go vs Samsung Gear VR

In the global VR ecosystem, companies like Samsung, Facebook, Google, Lenovo, Sony, Microsoft and Xiaomi are in competition for a $3.6 billion market. VR technologies are emerging very fast and each day we have new portable solutions. Instead of VR headsets that require a PC and a cable to connect, we are seeing the Mobile VR devices as an option that offers us far better accessibility.

The 2 most popular Mobile VR solutions that the current worldwide market offers are Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR. You may have a look at our 360 VR Showreel in order to see the different projects Codemodeon did in the 360 Video and 3D Video Animation category.

Both of the devices can be used with a remote control (a specific device for each one). Because there is no depth tracking, the remote plays the role of a keyboard or a mouse in a 2 dimensional space. This is the reason that movement in the virtual world by using the remote control is restricted. This problem is overpassed with Oculus Quest, a new device Facebook released on May 21st 2019.

It has a max frame-rate of 72FPS which means a smooth video (Gear VR supports max 60FPS).
It supports 3D spacial audio with its integrated speakers.

It has just 2 limited options for storage capacity (32GB or 64GB version).

Because it uses a smartphone as a processing unit, you may use the phone network as a data internet provider (not limited to just Wi-Fi).
You may chose the hardware and upgrade it when you want. You may chose among different smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S6,S7,S8, etc.
With the new smartphones Samsung Galaxy S and Note it is possible to achieve high performance in the apps.
It is possible to increase the internal storage by using an SD Card.
The phones used as a processing unit get a full charge in 90 minutes.

Gear VR Cons

If used for long time the smartphone warms up and this drastically affects the performance.
Using an earphone for the VR experience makes it less comfortable.
There is no remote control in the standard box. The remote is sold separately.
Because it needs a smartphone to work with, its hardware cost is quite expensive.
There are different versions of Gear VR that work with different Samsung phones. This creates a confusion when thinking which phone supports which Gear VR version.

HTC Vive Wireless Adaptor Review

One of the most faced problems in the VR industry is the headset cables that make our life very difficult while moving in the VR world. Even in very simple VR solutions, there are situations where the headset cables get around your body or foot and decrease all the real effect the VR offers. When you use the Vive’s wireless adaptor this problem is vanished. It has a power supply with a power bank which you can put in your pocket while playing. This adaptor supports the HTC Vive product and the new HTC Vive Pro.

The HTC Vive adaptor stands over the headset. It has a weight of 129 gr. and a tracking area of 6x6m. Depending on the usage, a full charge its power bank lasts about 2.5 hours. The chip that handless the fast wireless transmission of video and audio is the Intel WiGig technology that works on a 60 GHz bandwidth.

Hands on HTC Vive Pro

The most important feature that the new HTC Vive Pro offers is the display resolution. There is an AMOLED screen with 110 degree field of view. When compared to the previous version which had a 2160 x 1200 px resolution, the HTC Vive Pro now has a 2880 x 1600 px screen. This means a %78 screen upgrade with more realistic graphics and far better readability for text within the VR app. The screen refresh rate although, remains the same. It is still 90 Hz, as like in the previous version. Sure, we still don’t know when there will be a higher refresh rate, but we are excited to be waiting for that.

HTC Vive Pro

Now let’s have a look at the ergonomic perspective. The outer design upgrade plus the new cushion and head strap make it a better environment to stop light from outside. There is a 3d headphone and 2 microphones integrated in the headset. In the previous model there was an accessory to connect headphones, but now it is easier and there is no cable twisting. The 3D spatial audio is a key factor in giving a better VR experience. The new materials used are way lighter than the previous version, resulting in a comfortable placement on our head. The two cameras placed in front of the headset are used for Mixed Reality (MR) experiences. We can easily summarize it as like integrating AR with VR and creating a virtual world within the real environment you are found in. Below you may find 2 video examples that show how Vive Pro is used with Vive SRWorks SDK.

The new Light Houses now work in a 7x7m tracking area. Vive Pro has now a double size tracking area when compared to the previous version which had 3.5×3.5m. The software support is still the same, so both sensors (1.0 and 2.0) work with Steam VR Tracking.
